Introduction
In this project, my group (E.C. S, Sarah H, and Logan S.) and I worked on an interesting STEMistry project these past couple of months. For it, our teacher assigned us to make Hand Warmers. Yes, Hand Warmers. The reason for this is because it involves chemistry in a fun, fascinating way. Not only is this for doing chemistry, but there is a competition involved as well. The goal of making these Hand Warmers is also to make them for our school's student store and sell them to students to make money. Once we have finished our project, my group and I must present our Hand Warmer in front of a group of judges to explain that not only that our project is better than others, but that it is the cheapest and most affordable to make.
Slideshow Presentation:
Below is the slideshow presentation that my group and I presented in front of judges to prove our point of the project. Enjoy!
Testing Table:
Below is a picture of a table of tests we made with our 7 salts. This was said in slide 5 of our Slideshow Presentation.
Reflection:
Through this project, my group and I worked on testing the different salts and materials used most of the time. That being said, when we presented our project in front of the judges and gave them our "samples," they promptly started leaking. This is do to the fact that we spent most of our time finding the best salt and salt combinations that we didn't really think about it's durability until the very last minute. Even though we said in the slideshow that the use of duck tape would make it more durable, once the samples leaked on our judges, that quickly showed that its durability was not up to par. This is something my group and I can work on in the future.
During the time we were testing all of the salts, we started to lose a little of our focus. We had spent so much time into focusing on the salts that we got off task sometimes and did not finish all of the work we started on those days. Although we came up with many great ideas for our project, we allowed the distractions to persist and we did not focus on it as well as we first did starting the project. After presenting in front of the judges, we quickly learned that we could have put a lot of more focus into things we lost sight of, such as our Hand Warmer's durability.
Even though we messed up on many parts of the project, there were also good things that occurred in this project. Not only did all four of us enjoy working together, but we also were able to openly brainstorm our ideas while giving good constructive criticism. The work we put into the project were balanced evenly and no one felt left out. After the slideshow presentation we gave to the judges and the entire class, we all agreed that there was much room for improvement and that with more time put into our Hand Warmers, more possibilities awaited us. Our eyes are on the prize.
